International Symposium on Society and Resource Management (ISSRM)

June 22-26, 2016 in Houghton, Michigan, USA

Houghton is located on Lake Superior’s Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan. This area is known for its extensive shorelines, pristine beaches, vast forests and complex geology. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound such as hiking, mountain biking, paddling and rock hounding. The area’s mining legacy has left profound footprints from the beautiful historic sandstone buildings to the self-reliant local mixture of cultures.  The conference theme is  Transitioning: Toward Sustainable Relationships in a Different World.  Read More >>>

Climate change, environmental degradation, and resource limitations as well as globalization and demographic transitions have created a present and future world very different from the industrialization and limitless economic growth of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Our world is facing serious ecological and social (socio-ecological) transitions. Agencies, governments, communities, and businesses are struggling to adapt to these new realities that are increasingly challenging hegemonic social relationships with the natural world. The theme “Transitioning” seeks to capture the urgency, excitement, fear, opportunities, and challenges associated with the myriad socio-ecological changes facing the international community.

Potential sub-themes include: (1) embracing socio-ecological change; (2) understanding/mitigating/adapting to climate change; (3) energy futures; (4) political-economic resistance and resilience; (5) community-led transition initiatives; (6) environmental security; (7) global governance; and (8) population and environment.

Exhibit space is available for three full days for a in high-traffic area where coffee breaks will be served. Please contact info@iasnr.org for more information.

ISSRM 2016 would like to thank our current sponsors for helping to bring more students to our conference!

The ISSRM will once again feature a silent auction. We kindly ask that you consider donating an item. Proceeds reduce the cost of student attendance at ISSRM.  Last year’s silent auction raised nearly $1,300!  Let’s see if we can do even better this year! Please complete this survey to tell us about the item(s) you wish to donate. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!

Green Meeting Goals

The planning team for ISSRM 2016 is working hard to create a more environmentally sustainable meeting! We are working to minimize waste, use local foods for meals provided during the conference, and find other ways to green our meeting.

In alignment with these goals, we encourage you to choose the “Add Green Program” in the Marketplace and forego a printed program to reduce waste if you are comfortable using only a digital version of the conference program.

You will also be able to purchase carbon offsets when you register for the conference to address the emissions related to your conference travel. The offsets will be purchased from carbonfund.org, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, so your purchases will be tax deductible. Please look for and consider this option when you register.
